You have a few different options when it comes to selecting your Indian Wedding Reception MC. Most couples will have their DJ or someone from the DJ company take care of all MC duties. There are a lot of reasons why this is the best option. Some couples will have one of their guests do it. It will either be a close friend from college or their favorite sibling or cousin. This sounds like a great idea. In fact, my wife reminded me that 15 years ago we told most of our couples that this was a great idea. Over the past 25 years we have done a complete 180 on this. This blog will show you why its a bad idea.
When making this blog we kept our couples in mind. Half of the Indian weddings we DJ are with both the bride and groom being of South Asian descent (Hindu, Christian or Muslim). The other half of the weddings we do are mixed or fusion weddings where one person is from South Asian descent and the other is not (White, Black, Hispanic or Asian).
The reception is one of the most fun parts of the entire weekend. Couples look forward to this event the most. They finally get to let loose and party with friends and family. You need to communicate the style and vibe you want to your MC. They have to take those idea and make it even better. The reception needs to reflect your taste and style.
7 Reasons Guests Should Not MC Your Indian Wedding Reception Notes:
- We have heard couples, their families and guests bring up these issues.
- Indian weddings across the world have faced these issues
- We want every wedding to be fun and flawless
7 Reasons Guests Should Not MC Your Indian Wedding Reception are ranked in order of importance.
1) They are guests and not a vendor
A family member or close friend probably has had a very busy weekend with almost no sleep and not enough food/water. They will be exhausted by the time the reception comes around. Giving them an additional responsibility is probably not a good idea. Let them relax and enjoy the reception, just like you should be doing. Fill out the form on this page and we will send you an email with the direct contacts for planners. That will also help you relax.
2) Liquid Courage
Some guests given the responsibility of MCing will drink, a lot. When you combine that with a lack of sleep or not eating, its a disaster waiting to happen. Slurring on the mic, announcing things out of order, mispronouncing names, and the worst of all; cursing on the microphone. Drinking and public speaking do not belong together. Even if you ask the guest not to drink or smoke, there is no way to guarantee them staying sober.
3) Nervous
Professional DJ's and MC's make public speaking look very easy. We get paid to do it every weekend and because of that, have gotten really good over the years. When a guest tries to MC, most of them are nervous. One of the reasons why the second point above happens so often. Its not natural to speak in front of large groups and your guests probably don't have much experience with it.
4) Funny in small groups
We hear about this a lot. "Oh my friend is so funny, everyone will love him as an MC". Most of the time this person is really funny around his friends and is usually the center of attention amongst them. The rest of your guests don't know this person and inside jokes won't be funny to a majority of people. This person goes from being Mr. Cool to Mr. Extra really fast. 5) Can't get everyones attention
Everything that they rehearsed usually is based on everyone listening and understanding what they are saying. Controlling crowds, making them listen and do what you ask is a tough job. Most people can't do this. Which means the program begins while people are still talking or walking around. Can you imagine your entrance into the reception with half the people not realizing you are even there? Fill out the form on this page and we will send you an email with the direct contacts for planners.
6) Timing with the DJ
This one is critical. They will announce something and the DJ will start playing music and they will keep talking in the middle of whats happening. Also like a play by play while something is happening. "And now the couple will take the knife and cut the cake so we can have dessert latter". Not called for and can ruin a moment. Another thing that inexperienced guest MCs will do is stay silent when you need something to transition. A performance just ended and instead of being attentive and start talking as soon as its over, they are at their table talking to friends.
7) Microphone Etiquette
The final reason guest MCs are a bad idea is not knowing proper microphone etiquette. This includes many different things. Holding the mic like they are at a rap concert or video verses being at your wedding. Standing in the wrong place so the mic makes an error sound or where people can't see them. Not coaching people giving speeches on where to stand or hold the mic. If you need a DJ for your wedding that knows great music and will take care of you, contact us here.
